Wagner, Richard - Autograph Letter Signed 1859

Item #: M5706-Y8D

Star German opera composer (1813-1883), together with Giuseppe Verdi, Wagner was the most famous creator and a dominant figure in the genre for several decades of the 19th century.

Autograph letter signed, dated in Venice on February 6th, 1859, where Wagner had friends and normally spent vacation time. After a marital scandal and fight with his wife Minna, who had discovered a love letter Wagner wrote to friend Mathilde Wesendonck, Minna left for Dresden and Wagner went to Venice, where he stayed from the end of August 1858 until the end of March 1859.

Wagner writes to a banker named Golfstein in Berlin, asking for a loan, mentioning his delicated financial situation and his even more fragile personal life after the scandal, also mentioning his friendship with the von Bulows (which will be the subject of his next love scandal).

Two pages, 5.25 x 8.1 inches, written on both sides of a same 4-page folded sheet, in German, provided with full transcription and translation, in excellent condition.

An amazing autograph letter, written at the time Tristan und Isolde was being composed.
