Porgy & Bess World Premiere Program & Score, 1935 February 03 2013
With music by George Gershwin (1898-1937), libretto by DuBose Heyward and lyrics also by DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin, Porgy and Bess was world premiered at the Colonial Theater in Boston on September 30th, 1935. A rare program from that performance is here
The same year, the full score was published, in two editions: one deluxe (limited to only 250 copies!) and one common edition. Each copy of the deluxe edition was signed on the back by George Gershwin, DuBose Heyward, Ira Gershwin and Rouben Mamoulian (producer of the first Porgy and Bess).
One of these 250 signed luxury edition scores can be found here
The common edition is sometimes signed by Gershwin on the first page and from time to time appears on the market. The luxury edition is a rare find, most especially when it is in very good condition.
