French writer (1869-1950), philanthropist, and founder of the Université des Annales. Collection of five autograph letters in French (untranslated) signed by her as "Madame A. Brisson", dated between 1946 and 1949. All letters are about the years of the Université des Annales' journal "Conferencia", concerning music matters and upcoming concerts. We report an extract as a sample, concerning a book by Bernard Gavoty about the composer Jehan Alain (1911-1940): "...Quel plaisir vous m'avez fait, et quelle émotion vous m'avez donnée en m'envoyant ce beau, j'allais dire, ce pathétique livre sur Jehan Alain (...) je le relirai plus attentivement encore voulant en extraire un passage pour Conférencia..." .  Different sizes, lengths, and conditions (see scans provided for a detailed view). Autograph letter in French (untranslated) signed by him, dated in Paris, May 28, 1959, to a gentleman: “…Déjà le 25ème anniversaire de nos premiers enregistrements avec [Yvonne] Curti…”. Austrian violist (1927-2017) and composer, whose works have been influenced by Paul Hindemith, and his output includes oratorios, musicals, orchestral works, and others. Gorgeous black-and-white photograph signed by him, shown in his youth. Size is 4 x 5.5 inches, in excellent condition.

Collection of three autograph letters in French (untranslated) signed by him, no date, addressed to the literary critic Paul de Saint-Victor (1827-1881), concerning his contemporary composers: "...M. Victor Massé vient de publier un recueil de 12 mélodies qui a tout l'intérêt d'une partition. M. French pianist (1860-1951), a pupil of Louis Massart and Henri Herz at the Conservatoire, wife in second marriage to the baryton Louis-Charles Bataille (1822-1872). Collection of four autograph letters in French (untranslated) signed by her.  Letters are addressed to gentlemen concerning music lessons, music programs, and other matters. We report an extract as a sample: "...Aurons-nous le plaisir, mon mari (v. L. Ch. Battaille le baryton bien connu) et moi de faire parti de un des programmes des concerts symphoniques populaires? (...) Nous pourrons venir ensemble ou séparement. Je vous recommande aussi très chaudement le quatuor vocal que mon mari a fondé, qui est absolument remarquable et qu'il serait interessant de faire entendre. À ce propos: Mr. Battaille voulait vous écrire pour vous demander de composer pour eux un quatuor, car tous les compositeur de valeur ont promis d'écrire pour le quatuor. French cellist (1870-?) at the Concert Colonne, conductor and founder of the Schola Cantorum in Caen.  Autograph letter in French (untranslated) signed by him, dated December 17, 1923, where he addresses the music critic Henri Woollett (1864-1936) arranging for a meeting: “…je (…) n’ai pu vous repondre plus tôt, à cause de mon Concert d’hier…”. Size is 8.3 x 10.7 inches, 1 written page, evident central fold, creases, in very good condition. ALSO INCLUDED is his original printed business card with a short note in French written by him. Size is 3.9 x 2.3 inches, in excellent condition.

German conductor (1891-1945) at the Vienna State Opera from 1920 to 1938 before moving to America. Autograph note signed by him, dated in Vienna, December 18, 1923, where he quotes Franz Schubert’s Lied “An die Musik” (1817), with text from the poem of Franz von Schober. Size is 4.8 x 3.6 inches, some dirt stains, in overall excellent condition.

French musicologist (1857-1936), remembered for his work on folk songs of the French Alps. Set of two autograph letters in French (untranslated) signed by him, both dated 1912. We report an extract as a sample, concerning an autograph dedication by Gaspare Spontini: "...J'avais l'an dernier chez Costa-Borgna l'exemplaire des trios de César Franck revetus de la dédicace à Spontini, et j'apprends maintenant que c'est nous qui en êtes l'heureux possesseur. Je voudrais pour une publication de documents autographes, pouvoir reproduire par la photographie l'une de ces dédicaces de l'auteur de Béatitudes à l'auteur de La Vestale...".  Size is 5.5 x 8.4 inches each, 1 written page each, central folds, light creases, printed letterhead, both in very good condition. Autograph letter in French (untranslated) signed by him, dated June 13, 1978, where he addresses the Québécois organist and professor Jean Leduc (1933-2012): "...j'aurai téléphoné à M. Hadjadj (Polydor) au sujet de l'enregistrement du concerto de Tomasi....".  Size is 5.9 x 8.2 inches, 2 written pages in one sheet (front and back), central fold, creases, printed letterhead, in overall very good condition. Belgian baritone (1858-1922), who debuted at the Opéra de Lille in Lucia di Lammermoor and Hérodiade, and sung for the world premieres of Massenet's "La Terre Promise" (1902). Autograph letter in French (untranslated) signed by him, no date [probably 5-10-1901], where he addresses à gentleman, concerning a Stradivarius violin: "...venez chez moi (....), je vous montrereai un violon Stradivarius, très vieux et superbe de forme...".  Size is 5.3 x 8.5 inches, 1 written page, folds, some creases, printed letterhead, in very good condition.

Dutch flutist (1807-1872) and professor at the Swedish Academy of Music. Autograph letter in French (untranslated) signed by him, dated in Utrecht, May 1, 1855, where he addresses the flute manufacturer Godfroy, asking for an exchange of flutes: “…je vous voudrais bien demander d’avoir la bonté de me permettre de la renvoyer et d’avoir en échange pour elle le flûte avec 12 clarets que vous m’avez envoyé…”.  Size is 5.4 x 8.4 inches, 1 written pages, folds and creases, overall age toning, dust and rust stains, in overall good condition.

French violinist (1806-1888), conductor, composer, and collector. Set of two autograph letters in French (untranslated) signed by him, as follows: A. Le 17 Mars 72. To a journalist: “…Je vous serai fort obligé de vouloir bien dans votre compte rendu du Bal donné hier au soir au Ministère de l’Intérieur, mentionner mon nom comme Chef d’orchestre…”.  B. Jeudi. Typed letter in French (untranslated) signed by him, dated in Paris, March 17, 1931, where he addresses Monsieur Maranne, recommending him to contact Mr. Sax and asking for his general Catalogue of musical instruments.  Size is 8.2 x 10.8 inches, 1 typed page, with printed letterhead, evident signs of folding, some creases, in overall very good condition.

French composer (1878-1952). Autograph letter in French (untranslated) signed by him, no date [probably June 1927], where he addresses the writer and composer Marcel Diamant-Berger (1893-1990): “…On pourrait mettre en musique Azilal nous en parlerons si vous le voulez un peu plus tard : vous l’avez écris musicalement c’est très très bien…”.  Size is 8.4 x 11.7 inches, colored paper with watermark drawing, signs of folding, creases, printed letterhead, in overall very good condition.

Hungarian-born French conductor (1903-1989), often associated with Wagner repertoire. Autograph letter in French (untranslated) signed by him, dated August 3, 1976, to the journalist Max Favalelli, complimenting him for his TV show “Des Chiffres et des Lettres”. Size is 8.4 x 11.3 inches, central fold, light creases, printed letterhead, in overall very good condition.

French composer and librettist (1886-1919). Autograph letter in French (untranslated) signed by him, dated in Paris, March 9, 1907, to the composer and music critic Henri Woollett (1864-1936), concerning a music competition: "...j'apprends que vous organisez pour le 11 et 12 août un grand concours musical et j'ai l'honneur de vous offrir ma participation à ce tournoi artistique en qualité de membre du jury...".  Size is 8.3 x 10.7 inches, 1 page, central fold, overall dust stains, some cracks over the left border, in overall good condition.

French dramatist (1814-1867) and poet. Autograph letter in French (untranslated) signed by him, dated in Vienna, June 1, [1859], where he addresses a gentleman, thanking him for having sent a volume he recently translated and rejoices for the theater re-opening, hoping for new successes on the stage for the soprano Marie-Stéphanie Meyer (1828-1914).  Size is 5.3 x 8.3 inches, 3 written pages in one folded sheet, central fold, creases, overall age toning, in very good condition.

French cellist (1872-1937), and conductor. Page printed with his letterhead signed by him with a short sentiment and dated April 21, 1909. Size is 5.4 x 6.2 inches, restoration on the verso, in overall very good condition. ALSO INCLUDED is an autograph letter signed “E. Garès”  by a fellow musician: “…je suis obligé de passer mon après-midi de dimanche à travailler sérieusement mon concert de Monte Carlo, car je sui bien en retard et je commence déjà à me faire du mauvais sang….”. 1 p. Autograph letter in French (untranslated) signed by him, no date [ probably Paris, 1861 ca.], where he addresses a gentleman, concerning the renown engraver Firmin Gillot, inventor of the printing method based on relief photo-engraving known as "Gillotage": "...Je ne puis vous envoyer mon homme car il ne se dérangera pas. C'est lui qui fait toutes les planches des journaux illustrés tels que la Vie Parisienne, Le journal amusant (...) To a gentleman: “…Vous me proposez de louer ma salle pour 600 personnes, trois fois la semaine. En considération du petit nombre des concerts et craignant une faibles fréquence pendant la saison d’été, la salle étant déjà occupée pendant les après midi, me fait hésiter à entreprendre cette opération pour mon propre compte…”. 3 pp. In-8. German-born French pianist (1873-1929), a remarkable performer of Beethoven music. Collection of 9 autograph letters signed by him, dated between 1894 and 1923. Letters are addressed to music figures such as the violinist and composer Armand Parent (1863-1934) and concern music programs for concerts, meetings, theater seats, and a recommendation of her pupil “Mademoiselle Vessen”. For a total of 10 pp. in-8 and in-16 and on visiting card. ALSO INCLUDED is an autograph letter signed, dated le May 1, 1897, by the harpist and music teacher at Brussels Royal Conservatory Jean Risler (1865-1932) addressed to the pianist Louise Filliaux-Tiger (1848-1916), concerning the impossibility to get seats for one of the “…4 séances Ysaye (…) parce-que tout est loué, qu’il ne reste aucune place…”. French conductor (1838-1910). Full orchestral score of Tchaikovsky's “Capriccio Italien” Op. 45, signed by the conductor on the cover and with penned integrations, markings, and corrections by his hand throughout the score. The volume retains the original yellow cover with signature and annotations. A couple of pages with markings are shown here as an example (there are many pages with markings). Autograph letter in French (untranslated) signed by her, dated February 24 (no year), to a gentleman: “…je viens vous soumettre deux oeuvres qui ont été jouées en 1ère audition aux concerts Colonne avec l’espoir que l’une d’elle vous plaira et que peut-être vous la ferez figurer à l’une de vos remarquables concerts. Nos amis Monsieur et Madame J. Ibert et Monsier et Madame Grévrir-Bériza doivent déjeuner chez mois ces jours-ci, vous me ferez une très grand plaisir en vous joignant…”.  Size is 5.3 x 7.2 inches, 3 written pages in one folded sheet, monogram at the top, central fold, creases, in overall very good condition.

Autograph note in French (untranslated) signed by him, dated June 10, 1887, to a gentleman, thanking him for a present, saying he would ask to D'Auber to write an article on his "XV pièce de mariage". Russian pianist (1863-1945), composer, and conductor. Short autograph note in German (untranslated) signed by him, dated 30 Nov, 1927, where he addresses Mr.  Joan Kottenheim: “…wenn sie walt, Wie ich, sein weren dann wohlen Sie ein Autograph von längtoten musikern…”.  Size is 5.3 x 6.4 inches, 1 page, some creases, in very good condition.

French violinist (1841-1906) and composer. Autograph letter in French (untranslated) signed by him, dated April 21, 1867, to a gentleman, concerning a possible collaboration after his publication for the recent Exposition Universelle: “…En feuillettant votre publication illustrée « l’exposition universelle », l’idée me vient de vous écrire et de vous faire mes offres de services, dans le cas où vous auriez besoin de comptes-rendus touchant la musique à l’exposition. C’est surtout au moment de grands Festivals et des concerts historiques qu’il appartiendra à votre intéressante publication de ne pas délaisser un art vraiment universel…”. Autograph letter in French signed by him, dated June 20, 1859, where he addresses a gentleman: “…Dites-moi s’il y aura quelque chose dans l’Orphéon, je n’entends plus parler de votre aimable intention de faire un article sur mes deux ouvrages (…) Dans le cas ou votre article passerait pendant mon absence envoyer-le moi à Néris Hotel du Moulin (Allier). Soprano (1924-2003), most likely of Armenian origin but variously reported as of Turkish, Syrian, or Lebanese descent. Signed photograph, shown in role (possibly Massenet's Manon), inscribed and dated in 1957. Stamped on verso by photographer Sedge Le Blang, Metropolitan Opera, New York. Size is 8 x 10 inches, small creases on top left and right, otherwise in excellent condition. 

American soprano of Swedish-Hungarian descent (1918-2006) and German soprano (b.1940), both celebrated in Wagnerian and Straussian repertoire. Double signed photograph, shown in roles in Richard Strauss's Elektra. Size is 4 x 5.75 inches, in excellent condition.
